Access Hire Questions, Answered.

Straight answers for commercial buyers planning work at height, materials handling and equipment hire in London.

Which Access Platform Should I Hire?

Access platform selection starts with the work position and the available ground space. Tell us the height, horizontal reach, task, platform load and entrance dimensions. Photographs are useful if the location is difficult to describe. A specific model should only be agreed after its dimensions and operating limits have been checked against the site.

What Is The Difference Between Working Height And Platform Height?

Working height and platform height describe different things. Platform height is the elevation of the basket floor, while working height is a stated reach allowance above that floor. Ask what the supplier’s figure means for the proposed model. The operator’s task, posture and tools still need to be considered when checking the actual working position.

Can I Hire A Platform Without An Operator?

Platform hire without an operator may be available, depending on the equipment and supplier. Your business must still provide a competent operator and suitable site arrangements. Tell us whether you need equipment only or an operated option. A training card does not replace familiarisation with the particular machine being supplied or a task-specific risk assessment.

What Information Is Needed For A Quote?

A hire quote needs the site postcode, intended dates and a clear description of the work. Include the access height, outreach, entrance restrictions and ground or floor details where known. Explain whether you need an operator and whether the area remains occupied during the task. These details help avoid comparing quotes for different equipment or assumptions.

Can A Scissor Lift Be Used Outside?

A scissor lift can be used outside only when the particular model is rated for the conditions and the site assessment permits it. Indoor and outdoor limits can differ. Tell us about the surface and exposure before ordering. The machine’s manual, wind rating and operating restrictions must be checked for the actual working location.

Do I Need A Permit For Street Work?

Street work with an access platform may require permission from the relevant highway authority and agreed traffic or pedestrian arrangements. Requirements depend on the position and activity. Do not assume the hire agreement includes these permissions. Describe any pavement, road or public-space occupation in your enquiry so responsibilities can be agreed before delivery.

How Much Does Access Platform Hire Cost?

Access platform hire cost depends on the machine, hire period, delivery and collection arrangements, and any operator requirement. Restricted delivery windows and difficult access can change the proposal. Ask for an itemised quote covering transport, fuel or charging terms, damage arrangements and any extension charges. No fixed price applies to every London commercial site.

Do MEWPs Need A LOLER Examination?

A MEWP needs a current thorough examination under the applicable lifting equipment requirements. HSE states that MEWPs should be examined at least every six months or under a competent person’s examination scheme. Check the report before use and arrange ongoing pre-use checks. A thorough examination is separate from routine maintenance. Read HSE guidance.

Can A Telehandler Lift People?

A telehandler is primarily for materials handling and should not be treated as a routine alternative to a personnel access platform. If the task involves people working at height, describe that requirement first. The equipment and method must be assessed for that purpose by a competent person rather than adapting a materials hire request on arrival.

What Happens If Bad Weather Stops The Work?

Weather can stop access platform work when conditions exceed the selected machine’s limits or the site assessment permits no safe operation. Agree the stop-work arrangements and hire terms before booking. Ask how postponement, extensions and collection are handled. A booked delivery does not mean the platform can be operated regardless of wind, surface conditions or visibility.

Can You Help With A Narrow Entrance?

A narrow entrance may lead to a compact scissor lift or tracked spider lift proposal, depending on the task. Measure the full route, including corners, thresholds and overhead clearances. Send the working-space dimensions as well as the entrance width. A machine that fits through a doorway may still need considerably more space to deploy and operate.

What Happens After I Send An Enquiry?

Your enquiry gives us the details needed to review the requirement. If you agree, those details may be passed to a suitable local firm to discuss equipment, availability and a quote. Submission does not reserve a machine or create a hire agreement. Confirm the proposed supplier, specification and commercial terms before arranging the work.
